Many causes of pain and other symptoms are a result of muscular imbalances of the spinal muscles and misalignment of the the bones of the spine, called the vertebrae.
Muscular imbalances occur in two ways. The obvious, is the sudden movement such as picking something up the wrong way or by getting jolted in an accident, playing sports or falling! We also get sublte muscular imbalances simply by having improper postural habits, the way we sit, stand, and sleep. Other causes are from sitting on a thick wallet only in one back pocket, carrying a purse on the same shoulder all the time, or even the way we exercise!
Unfortunately, when even the slightest muscular imbalance occurs, the spinal bones compensate for this imbalance causing a guarding or fixation of the involved joints, causing what we call a "subluxation". The combination of these spinal and muscular imbalances in turn affects proper nerve and blood flow.
Our treatment is therefore geared toward not only realignment of the spinal bones as in most chiropractic offices, but special attention is directed toward repair of the muscle component as well. Once pain relief and improved spinal alignment has been achieved, we will show you proper exercises to do at home to strengthen your spine to prevent reinjury.
